{"id":1180,"date":"2010-10-28T00:30:48","date_gmt":"2010-10-27T23:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/?p=1180"},"modified":"2011-11-23T00:48:23","modified_gmt":"2011-11-23T00:48:23","slug":"how-i-compute-part-2-web-browsing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/how-i-compute-part-2-web-browsing\/","title":{"rendered":"How I compute \u2013 Part 2: Web Browsing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this part of the series, I&#8217;m going to tackle the &#8216;Web Browser&#8217;.\u00a0 What it is, and  why you need it to be one of the <em>most <\/em>reliable pieces of software on your  computer.\u00a0 But first, before we go anywhere, if you haven&#8217;t looked at  <a href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2010\/10\/how-i-compute-part-1-anti-virus\/\" target=\"_self\">Part 1<\/a>, head over there now and follow that through to completion since  if your system isn&#8217;t secure, you cannot trust it, and therefore you  cannot trust <em>anything<\/em> you do on it.<\/p>\n<p>In this series of articles I\u2019m going to take a break away from my normal theme to relay to you how I do the \u201ccomputer\u201d things I do in an attempt to save time and minimize trouble caused by PC glitches.\u00a0 Prevention in this case, is far better, cheaper, quicker, than the cure.\u00a0 I touched upon this idea of being more time efficient with my <a href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2010\/07\/how-to-reclaim-time-google-reader\/\" target=\"_self\">article on Google Reader<\/a> for tracking RSS feeds.<\/p>\n<p>This particular article will deal with the program you use to surf the Internet &#8211; and since you do that a lot, why not give yourself the best tool for the job?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is a web browser?<\/h2>\n<p>As I mentioned, you&#8217;re probably using a web browser right now to read this article.\u00a0 It&#8217;s basically a name for a group of programs that allow you to &#8220;surf&#8221; the internet.\u00a0 Many people equate <em>the internet<\/em> with &#8220;Internet Explorer&#8221; and the blue e found on nearly everybody&#8217;s desktop.\u00a0 This makes sense, because for a long time that was all we had that was usable.\u00a0 However, Internet Explorer is not, and for a long time has not been, the best choice for surfing the internet today.<\/p>\n<p>When choosing your web browser, you should look for the following features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>security <\/strong>&#8211; running a web browser that is tightly integrated with the rest of your computer is not a good idea &#8211; IE is unfortunately.\u00a0 Microsoft Windows wouldn&#8217;t know up from down if you removed its Internet Explorer.\u00a0 Given, as I mentioned in my previous article, that being connected to the internet is a liability in itself, you don&#8217;t want to be using a program that has it&#8217;s roots so deeply embedded into your operating system (Windows XP, Vista, 7 etc.).<\/li>\n<li><strong>speed <\/strong>&#8211; there&#8217;s a lot of ho0ha about speed of the latest browsers, but the performance difference <em>between <\/em>the top offerings isn&#8217;t something you&#8217;ll notice.\u00a0 You will notice, however, their performance over IE and older generation browsers.\u00a0 IE doesn&#8217;t fall under the category of &#8220;top offerings&#8221;, in my humble opinion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>customizable <\/strong>&#8211; this is where the latest browsers really shine and the topic really demands a whole article in itself.\u00a0 With the best web browsers you can add on lots of cool tools and spruce it up to do more than just &#8220;browsing&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is more to be said about what you want from your browser, but those are the basics.\u00a0 If you haven&#8217;t picked up already, I recommend that if you&#8217;re using IE as your web browser of choice right now, then you should read on to find out your options and switch.<\/p>\n<h2>Your options<\/h2>\n<p>There are many different browsers out there, but this article isn&#8217;t about doing a side-by-side review of everything, but to open your eyes to the fact that there are <em>are<\/em> alternatives and you should take a few minutes to try them out.\u00a0 Here they are, in no particular order \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Firefox<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is my browser of choice for several reasons, and has been since it was first released 6 years ago. When you first install it, you can import all of your IE favourites and settings etc. so the upgrade is very easy.\u00a0 It has thousands of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pocket-lint.com\/news\/34102\/25-best-firefox-add-ons\" target=\"_blank\">add-ons<\/a> and lots of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getpersonas.com\" target=\"_blank\">themes<\/a> to make your browser more aesthetically pleasing \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 Seriously, once you start using it, you&#8217;ll never look back.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Download here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google Chrome<\/strong>.\u00a0 If Firefox weren&#8217;t so good at everything I need it to do, I&#8217;d have Google Chrome on instead.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very nice.\u00a0 It&#8217;s <em>fast<\/em>, it&#8217;s economical on monitor real estate and it&#8217;s made by the best, so they&#8217;re quick to innovate and new releases are shipping every couple of months.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a heavy user of Google Documents, this is a great choice.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t feel that Chrome is anywhere near as customizable as Firefox, but that could just be my ignorance of the software.\u00a0 I also don&#8217;t much like how Google installers manage to install a few extra things along the way.\u00a0 Firefox just is what is &#8211; a browser.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/chrome\/\" target=\"_blank\">Download here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opera<\/strong>.\u00a0 This browser would be my 3rd choice and it still holds support for Windows 98!\u00a0 So if you&#8217;re struggling away on IE 5.0, move today.\u00a0 There&#8217;s not much I can tell you about this, except that this too is <em>fast<\/em>.\u00a0 It is, for me, a little less customizable than the others, but again, that&#8217;s probably ignorance on my part.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opera.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Download here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you&#8217;re currently using IE, switch to any of the 3 mentioned about and hopefully you&#8217;ll start to begin to enjoy web surfing again.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;blah blah is not currently your default browser&#8221; &#8211; what does that even mean?<\/h2>\n<p>This is actually very simple, but many people don&#8217;t fully understand what they&#8217;re being asked when they get a popup like this from their browser.<\/p>\n<p>To illustrate, what program do you use to play music?\u00a0 You double click a mp3 file on your computer and what opens up &#8211; iTunes?\u00a0 WinAMP?\u00a0 RealPlayer? (eeww!)\u00a0 Whatever it is, <em>that<\/em> program is your <strong><em>default<\/em><\/strong> player for music on your computer.<\/p>\n<p>When your computer opens up a website link, say for example you click it in another program or in an email within Outlook, it will ask Windows what program to use in order to open it.\u00a0 Windows will reply with the <strong><em>default<\/em><\/strong> option.\u00a0 When you install one of the browsers mentioned above, the first time you open it, you will probably get a popup box asking you something about your default browser.\u00a0 Say &#8216;Yes&#8217; to making it your default (especially if you only had IE before) and tick the little box that says, &#8220;Don&#8217;t ask me this question again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Done.\u00a0 But not quite.\u00a0 Now open up your Internet Explorer one more time.\u00a0 Since it&#8217;s <em>no longer<\/em> your default browser, it will ask you do you want to change it back.\u00a0 Say &#8216;No&#8217;, and again, check the box &#8220;Don&#8217;t ask me again&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Sorted.<\/p>\n<h2>Flash Player<\/h2>\n<p>Save yourself any hassle in the future (for the likes of YouTube etc.) if you downloaded any of the 3 browsers above, and install the Flash player now.\u00a0 Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/get.adobe.com\/flashplayer\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/get.adobe.com\/flashplayer\/<\/a> and follow the steps to install.\u00a0 Just a note, on the right-hand side there&#8217;s a &#8220;McAfee Security Scan Plus&#8221; &#8211; un-tick that box since you don&#8217;t need it.<\/p>\n<h2>If you&#8217;ve come this far&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>&#8230; you should now be happily enjoy life surfing the Internet once more.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re still limping along the internet with the browser that came with Windows, go to any of the 3 options listed above and download an alternative, install it, and make browsing fun again!<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this part of the series, I&#8217;m going to tackle the &#8216;Web Browser&#8217;.\u00a0 What it is, and why you need it to be one of the most reliable pieces of software on your computer.\u00a0 But first, before we go anywhere, if you haven&#8217;t looked at Part 1, head over there now and follow that through [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":24,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[211,221,217,219,216,218,220,215],"class_list":["post-1180","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-how-to","tag-computing","tag-default-browser","tag-google-chrome","tag-internet-explorer","tag-mozilla-firefox","tag-opera","tag-options","tag-web-browser"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
