Writing.\u00a0 I enjoy it.\u00a0 I never used to like it, but each time I come to sit down here in front of the computer, I greatly enjoy the process.\u00a0 But the down-side comes under the cover of doubts and questions – does anyone actually read this stuff?<\/p>\n

The answer is yes – the stats of the site seem to indicate this, but when I sit down to write an article of a mainly personal nature, I often doubt there’s anyone plugged into this site enough to care.\u00a0 I’ve started and never completed countless articles because after reading the draft, it sounds silly and feels more than a little weird to bother putting it online.<\/p>\n

But today see me in a mood of defiance, where I’m telling myself I don’t care.<\/p>\n

If you don’t like it, you are free to walk away.<\/p>\n

If there’s nothing for you here, don’t read it, don’t bookmark it, and don’t share it.<\/p>\n

So there! … but I would prefer you stayed around and got involved.<\/p>\n

Sitting in Belfast airport, about to embark on the first leg of my travel for 2011, I’m contemplating how I will approach it, considering what lessons I learned from last year’s travel, and what insights can I bring forward with me on this journey.\u00a0 This article is a product of this process…<\/p>\n

Sharing is Caring<\/h2>\n

I re-watched the movie ‘Into the Wild’ last week and I recommend it to anyone thinking of travelling either alone or in company.\u00a0 Sure, no-one wants to finish up as McCandless did, and we can learn from him, but there’s inspiration dished out in that film by the bucket load.<\/p>\n

As he lay dying in the end, he wrote down perhaps one of the greatest lessons to us all.\u00a0 A simple and beautiful observation, and one I realised once I left home a decade ago, but that my inner-introvert<\/a> often holds me back from.\u00a0 It is this:<\/p>\n

“Happiness is only real when shared”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course you can have happiness without it being shared, but that kind of happiness is a rare thing compared to the alternative.<\/p>\n

My goal this time around is to attempt to connect as widely as I possibly can.\u00a0 Where I might shy away from people I will engage.\u00a0 I will try to say ‘Yes’ before I can think of excuses to say ‘No.’<\/p>\n

Like everyone else, I’m most at peace in my comfort zone<\/a>.\u00a0 Keeping to myself, and sus’ing out people before I engage them is a terribly bad habit of mine.\u00a0 I like to keep a distance emotionally and refrain from commitments until I know for sure I wont get messed around.<\/p>\n

That has its perks, but it also clearly has its downside – it means when you travel, you travel alone.\u00a0 Sure, I made some great friends last year as I travelled, but I also missed opportunities.\u00a0 This probably needs another article or two to flesh out, but for now I’m putting it online to get it out in the open, hopefully helping me to stick to it.<\/p>\n

The plan: write more of the journey – both travel and business<\/h2>\n

With this new journey that I start today I’m hoping to throw up more articles in “travel diary” format as I move.\u00a0 I also intend to document in as much detail as time will allow, the path I take into Internet Business<\/a> which is in itself a big journey for me in 2011.\u00a0 Hopefully it’ll be a raving success and I’ll have heaps of tips and information to share that you’ll all find useful.\u00a0 Or not\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
