{"id":3121,"date":"2012-02-19T18:08:22","date_gmt":"2012-02-19T18:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/?p=3121"},"modified":"2012-02-25T11:08:24","modified_gmt":"2012-02-25T11:08:24","slug":"dieting-is-not-about-less-dieting-is-about-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/dieting-is-not-about-less-dieting-is-about-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"Dieting is not about less; dieting is about enough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3219\" title=\"Scales Help!\" src=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/scales_help-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Scales Help!\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/scales_help-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/scales_help-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/scales_help.jpg 535w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Just over 4 weeks ago I started the &#8216;Slow Carb Diet&#8217;, outlined in Tim Ferriss&#8217; latest book: [AMAZON_AFF item=&#8221;4hb&#8221; text=&#8221;The Four Hour Body&#8221;].<\/p>\n<p>If you know me, or have read much of my site, you&#8217;ll know I&#8217;ve a huge man-crush on Tim Ferriss.<\/p>\n<p>His first book, [AMAZON_AFF item=&#8221;4hww&#8221; text=&#8221;The Four Hour Work Week&#8221;]\u00a0was a massive inspiration and all-round help when I quit my job in Japan, and tried out some &#8220;<a title=\"What does Meaningful Travel really involve?\" href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2010\/07\/what-does-meaningful-travel-really-involve\/\">meaningful travel<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>So I was sure I&#8217;d get some value from his second book.<\/p>\n<p>Almost instantly I was taken by the idea that I could lose fat without actually changing my exercise and fitness routine (which has\u00a0recently been practically non-existent).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All I was required to do was change what I ate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nothing new here of course. \u00a0I&#8217;ve <a title=\"Why going on a diet sucks\" href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2009\/04\/why-going-on-a-diet-sucks\/\">written before that diets suck<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; and I still hold to that. Diets in the traditional sense do suck, because they typically require huge sacrifice and hunger&#8230; hunger because you&#8217;re simply not eating enough.<\/p>\n<p>Sod that&#8230; I enjoy eating and I don&#8217;t enjoy being hungry.<\/p>\n<p>But what if, by the foods you eat, you can <em>engineer your body<\/em> to utilize fats instead of store them?<\/p>\n<p>Sign me up!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>The 2 reasons I started dieting&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>Convincing people of the merits of doing something &#8220;different&#8221; is usually a tiresome task. But here it is&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>[1] Because of the fat you can&#8217;t see<\/h3>\n<p>If you know what I look like in person, you&#8217;ll (hopefully) agree I&#8217;m not fat.<\/p>\n<p>But I do have &#8220;excess&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>And when you have visible excess, no matter how little, you can safely assume you have &#8220;internal excess&#8221; also.<\/p>\n<p>Fat doesn&#8217;t just sit on your ass, hang from your arms, or give you that 3rd chin you&#8217;ve always wanted. It&#8217;s everywhere. And when you have visible\u00a0excess, you&#8217;re bound to have some that you can&#8217;t see.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t like the idea of internal health problems that I can&#8217;t see &#8211; I generally subscribe to the idea that <a title=\"What are the benefits of fasting?\" href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2009\/05\/what-are-the-benefits-of-fasting\/\">internal body health<\/a> leads to sustained and natural well-being all over.<\/p>\n<p>I ultimately wanted to clean out some of the internal fat that surrounds my organs as well as the little bit extra on my ass. The hips don&#8217;t lie folks. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<h3>[2] Because of my current eating habits<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;m a creature of habits. If I find something I enjoy, I&#8217;ll do it repeatedly until I physically can&#8217;t take it any more in my life.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve always done and it&#8217;s no different with food.<\/p>\n<p>I moved to Spain nearly a year ago and discovered Spanish serrano ham. \u00a1Madre mia! Put that on some bread, slap on some cheese then stick it under the grill. <em>Heaven.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That was my staple diet for about 9 of the last 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>I knew I had a problem &#8211; the inability to get off my ass and try something different.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t know how to cook with anything except rice, pasta and potatoes. And even then, I was limited with those.<\/p>\n<p>The new diet that Tim Ferriss proposed would force me <a title=\"Un-comfort zones point to our true fears\" href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2010\/06\/un-comfort-zones-point-true-fears\/\">outside of my comfort zone<\/a> and demand that I take a controlling stake in my daily eating habits.<\/p>\n<p>It could only be good for me, so I signed-up to the challenge.<\/p>\n<h2>Results of the Slow Carb Diet?<\/h2>\n<p>In nearly 5 weeks, I lost approximately 4~5kg &#8211; that&#8217;s between 5~7{97de8d2e860196f43620abbbd870152438d0e1a3bef5042cd7be1942d94df9d0} of my\u00a0initial\u00a0body weight.<\/p>\n<p>That also involves a slight weight gain from a bit of resistance exercise to build up back, shoulder, arm and leg strength.<\/p>\n<p>I had to buy a new pair of jeans a few days ago to compensate.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty impressive.<\/p>\n<h2>A diet where you eat more, not less<\/h2>\n<p>With this diet I actually ate more, not less. The difference was the <em>types of foods<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>If you think you&#8217;re overweight, or at least have a little extra padding you want to get rid&#8230; get conscious about what you&#8217;re putting into your body.<\/p>\n<p>Bread in excess, loads of carbs, chocolate, soft-drinks, sweets etc. are a 20th century\u00a0phenomenon. Our bodies aren&#8217;t designed to properly handle this stuff, and there&#8217;s little or no nutritional\u00a0value in them for you.<\/p>\n<p>Dieting shouldn&#8217;t be about calorie counting, serious permanent\u00a0dietary\u00a0restrictions, or forcing yourself to live on terrible foods you hate.<\/p>\n<p>It should be a conscious decision to improve the food you eat and in-turn improve your health. Weight loss is just a by-product.<\/p>\n<p>I had hardly anything to lose, and I lost a good bit without any significant increase in exercise, all the while eating some of the best meals I&#8217;ve had in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t wreck yourself with crap commercially motivated diets that promise silly results if you eat only carpet for a month. That&#8217;s not fun and it wont last.<\/p>\n<p>Just be good to yourself and your body.<\/p>\n<p>Comments, questions, feedback, spam?
