{"id":851,"date":"2010-03-16T07:04:06","date_gmt":"2010-03-16T07:04:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/?p=851"},"modified":"2012-02-19T19:22:19","modified_gmt":"2012-02-19T19:22:19","slug":"vagabonding-and-the-art-of-world-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/vagabonding-and-the-art-of-world-travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Vagabonding, and the art of world travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_855\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-855\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-855 \" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"vagabonding\" src=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/vagabonding-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/vagabonding-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/vagabonding-96x150.jpg 96w, https:\/\/paulgoodchild.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/vagabonding.jpg 307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-855\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vagabonding- the only book you need to bring on your journey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been re-reading, as I tend to mention many times on this blog about books I really enjoy, the book [AMAZON_AFF item=&#8221;vagabonding&#8221; text=&#8221;Vagabonding&#8221;]\u00a0by Rolf Potts.\u00a0 It&#8217;s short little book, and wouldn&#8217;t take even the slowest of readers very long to get through, but it is jam-packed with so much good material I&#8217;ve had to stop underlining passages because it just takes too long to get through otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nIf any part of you wants to engage in some travelling anywhere, I highly recommend grabbing a copy of this book before setting off, and then bringing it with you as a reminder on the road.\u00a0 I first read this book a year ago, in Koh Samui, when I came here to detox and to provide a space to think about <a href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2010\/07\/are-you-being-specific-about-what-you-want\/\">what I wanted to do<\/a> in the next phase of my life.\u00a0 This book sowed the seeds on very fertile ground and it&#8217;s no understatement to say it greatly influenced me to get up and go with this travelling spree I&#8217;m on right now.\u00a0 Not the only influence by any means though.<\/p>\n<p>Today I read a section called &#8220;Keeping it real&#8221;, a phrase that many who know me will have heard me use quite a lot. \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 It touches upon many points, one of which is actually what I&#8217;ve been <a href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2010\/03\/we-see-things-as-we-are\/\">talking<\/a> about <a href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2010\/02\/rarely-just-coconut\/\" target=\"_blank\">recently<\/a> as well, the whole <em>tourist<\/em> versus <em>traveller.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Get this, for a great line.\u00a0 It&#8217;s simple and yet a point missed by many:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In many ways, embracing reality is daunting &#8211; not because of its hazards but because of its complexities. Thus, the best way to confront reality is not with a set method of interpretation (<strong>which will allow you to recognise only patterns you already know<\/strong><\/em><em>) but with a sincere attitude of open-mindedness.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even if you&#8217;re not interested in travelling abroad, this is still a great to read since travelling doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean exploring the outer reaches of Mongolia, but what is being presented here is a mindset\/approach about engaging with the world, a world that you don&#8217;t know and haven&#8217;t met yet.\u00a0 And that can also be, and very likely is, right around the corner from where you live.\u00a0 CNN and BBC news are not worthy substitutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I leave this article with just one more quote that lends itself to one of my previous <a href=\"http:\/\/paulgoodchild.net\/blog\/2010\/03\/we-see-things-as-we-are\/\">articles<\/a> &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>In reality, travel is not a social contest, and vagabonding has never represented a caste on the tourist\/traveler hierarchy &#8230; the main conceit in trying to distinguish travelers from tourists is that you end up witha\u00a0 flimsy facade of presumed insiders and outsiders.\u00a0 By the <strong>vacuous <\/strong>standards of fashion, insiders and outsiders are necessary, but in the realm of travel (where, by definition, you are always a guest in foreign places) such a distinction is ridiculous.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Have a wee think on that one.\u00a0 I&#8217;m off on my motorcycle&#8230;\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re traveling, or at least giving it some serious consideration, then you need to do some preparation and this is most importantly mental preparation.
