What would excite me?

I’ve been taking a go at re-reading [AMAZON_AFF item=”4hww” text=”The Four Hour Work Week”] only this time a little more thoroughly and with a view to take notes as I go along -there’s so much in there that it’s impossible to remember all the salient points without jotting down at least a few pointers along the way.  One quote I took down from the book today summarizes a very important point, which I’d like to share:

The question you should be asking isn’t, “What do I want?” or “What are my goals?”, but “What would excite me?

The point here is that too often we ask ourselves similarly vague and indefinable questions that leave us unable to put a concrete answer to them.  It’s much easier, though surprisingly more difficult than we might think at first, to answer the question of what would get us excited and passionate again, than it is to broadly think about what we might want.  Ultimately, what you want is to be entertained, excited, happy, sad, and much more… not bored, idle and apathetic.  What are the things you could be doing with your time … your life … that would fire you up; that would get you excited again about living?  How long has it been since you’ve done something you’re truly passionate about?  How long has it been since you’ve even thought about what makes you passionate?

By breaking it up a little and rephrasing the question, it makes it at least a little easier to focus on what we actually want and the direction in which we want to take our lives.

  2. […] It really is exactly as it sounds, though you can substitute the word “live” for almost any number of things that falls under the category ‘things you have a deep passion for’.  This can be anything and oddly enough, I have discovered we often don’t readily know what gets us excited. […]
